2015 Halloween: Greek Gods and Goddesses

Halloween Costumes

11 Years of Halloween Costumes

As you can see, some years we all four dressed up and some years Scott and Molly didn’t. Participating in our local church’s Trunk or Treat motivated us all to get into costume for the last few years.

Ares (god of war), Hera (queen of the gods), Zeus (king of the gods, god of lightning), Artemis (goddess of the hunt) = 4 of the 12 Olympians (the rest of the 12 + Hades were depicted as figures, like on a Grecian urn). Audrey drew (with art instruction) each of the figures and learned about each one and the concepts they represented. This school project took over 2 months and grew out of her interest in the Percy Jackson book series. She and daddy enhanced the accessories with LED glowing lights — which is my most favorite Halloween concept for safety reasons – makes us much more visible. She also created Finnian’s helmet using paper mache. (Originally, we were going to sew all the robes, but they ended up being store bought due to time constraints.)

2014 Halloween

Scott and Molly reused costumes from before the kids were born to dress up like the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. The night cap and red cape were hand sewn all those years ago. Egyptian Pharaoh King Tut was a meld of store-bought and sewn at home and Eighties Girl (1980s Chic) was the most fun costume to piece together from current day items and brought back fond memories for Scott.

2013 Halloween

Inspired by Finnian’s school project about dinosaurs, Scott and Molly dressed up as Paleontologists. Finnian was a robot, using a computer monitor as a helmet and the guts of the computer attached to a gray sweatsuit. Audrey repeated the previous year’s costume for Trunk or Treat and dressed as her favorite animal – a kitty cat! For Halloween night, she dressed as a zombie (not pictured).

2012 Halloween

Molly sewed wings into a black robe Finnian had used years before as the Emperor and added ears to make him a bat. He was very clear that he was not Batman, but just a bat. After hours of sewing fluffy fabric, Audrey got to dress as her favorite animal, a cat. We covered a headband in matching fabric to create the ears. Lumberjack costumes were easy, comfortable and warm on the chilly Halloween night.

2011 Halloween

It’s the Muppets! This year was the first year we participated in the local church’s trunk or treat event. We went all out on our costumes as Kermit and Miss Piggy. Audrey was Disney’s Rapunzel, which had just been released as an animated movie earlier that year. Finnian’s costume, as is usually the case, was chosen according to the weapon he was most drawn to when shopping. Native American Indian had the best tomahawk.

2010 Halloween

Cruella De Vil, from 101 Dalmatians, almost perfect…except the white hairspray we bought only showed up under a black light….so it didn’t work out at all. We found out too late to fix it. Disney’s Snow White and Dr. Doofenshshmirtz (Phineas and Ferb) were unmistakable. Finnian dressed up as the Emperor from Star Wars and of all our costumes, this was mom’s least favorite simply because he disappeared into the night. There weren’t enough glow sticks to make him visible while walking through the neighborhood.

2009 Halloween

Poor daddy had the flu this year so mom braved the rainy Halloween night for a brief walk around the block to trick or treat.  Pirates and Princesses pretty much sums up our interests for the entire year.

Finnian was living his life as a Cowboy and thankfully Audrey played along at Halloween. These costumes were easy to wear and pretty much came from our dress up clothes stash.

Molly’s aunt brought back these wonderful costumes from one of her visits to Japan. These costumes were the perfect mix of “special” dress up and comfortable clothing.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears brought no complaints about itchy costumes from Audrey and sweet little Finnian just smiled in his baby bear costume.

Saved all these years, this little German outfit from Molly’s childhood was Audrey’s costume. We sewed matching outfits to go along with the family theme of Bavarian Germany.
